There was a time when I thought that Tracey
Emin and her like were not true 'artists' that it was all a gimmick to get publicity for the exhibitions and the enfant terribles of the art world were a good vehicle for that, I have to admit I changed my mind. I have a fantastic book about her work, a huge heavy thing that was given to me as a gift and after looking though some of the work she has done I do believe she is a true artist, the artist who creates from the soul, her life experiences, what she has learned about life are laid bare. There is one piece which is just a word in neon lights which I love and a modern tapestry style with phrases (she uses a lot) which is something that appeals to me and it made me draw breath it is so powerful ,there is a lot of emotion and pain and confusion in her work which is very human, she is earthy and raw, I don't like all her work visually and wouldn't necessarily have some of it on my wall, but that's not the definition of an artist, there are some pieces which I would certainly love to own and display on my wall at home. What do others think, what's your opinion?

I know what you mean, but now i have had time to consider it I believe she is non-commercial in the true sense, in that people would buy her work to put in homes, she is a conceptual artist and it works well in exhibitions I feel, it is hard hitting though

She has an article regularly in the Independent which I read, and really do like her honesty...occasionally her art works appeals particularly the tapestry, but a lot of it I find just too personal for comfort...great big hugs...

Yeah.. Tracey Emin.. saw her on TV tonight with a friend. She seems to provoke a reaction whatever. Friend's comment was not follow-up-able! I'd love to be at one of her gigs. I bet you know you're in her presence before you see her.
I was too techy before. I don't think in UK we teach/learn much about seeing art around us. Curse of having good pop music?
Back on topic.. thanks for motive to look more closely at her work.-

Cool

Have to admit that when I first came across her - around the time of her "unmade bed" - I didn't rate her much and did wonder if she was taking the mickey out of everyone. Since then, I do think Tracey Emin is gifted and as you say she's very earthy in many respects. Although I haven't seen all of her work, she's not my type of artist (if I can put it like that).
